The course is mainly based on the identification and assessment of major challenges that can be experienced by individuals who are a part of a project. The ways by which project leadership can be managed for facing the challenges will also be a part of the analysis that will be done in the course. The improvement opportunities that can be used by the individuals for facing the challenges in a project will be discussed in the course as well. The students who will complete the course will be able to understand the process of managing a project and facing the challenges in a proper manner.
Project management is related to applying the methods, processes, knowledge, experience, and skills for the purpose of achieving the specific objectives of a project based on the criteria of project acceptance within the agreed parameters. Project management also provides details regarding the final deliverables which are constrained to the finite budget and timescale. The project managers are mainly responsible for organizing, directing and planning completion of the specific projects for the organizations while ensuring that the projects are on budget, on time and the within the scope. The major role played by project managers include, planning everything that includes the activities related to execution and delivery.
The project manager aims at directing the teams for achievement of the common goals, delegating the work effectively, managing resources of time, management deployment-related deliverables, monitoring the progress and tracking the roadblocks, conducting the regular meetings, establishing the shared vision, managing reports and documentation, developing a plan B, creating the self-governing teams, keeping the teams in a close-knit manner and coordinating with clients.

Learning Outcomes 1. Critical analysis of the interaction and mutual influence between infrastructure project, society and the environment, and the sphere of influence of the project manager in impacting those outcomes.
Assessment 2 builds upon the first assessment and adopts a similar case study approach but focuses on the implementation and decommissioning phases of an integrated infrastructure project. This assessment is designed to enhance your knowledge and analytical skills in the management of the project life cycle with a specific focus on project performance, asset management and sustainability and operational safety and security. This will involve the consideration of management perspectives in terms of quality, control, risk, leadership and decision-making throughout the life cycle and which are integral to ongoing process improvement and project success. Critical to this success is the way in which infrastructure systems are managed and, specifically, the need to plan prior to and beyond the decommissioning phase of a project for asset maintenance and sustainability. This inevitably involves safety and security considerations both from a contracting and user point of view.
The assessment mainly adopts a case study approach although it focuses on decommissioning and implementation phases of the integrated infrastructure project. The case study selected for Assessment 1 or the alternative case study which you believe can address the requirements for analysing and examining management of project life cycle, asset management, operational security and sustainability in an easier manner. The analysis and findings from the case study can be structured in four parts as follows:
Part 1: Infrastructure Project Life Cycle,
Part 2: Managing Infrastructure Project Performance,
Part 3: Asset Management and Sustainability
Part 4: Infrastructure Project Security and Safety.
Particular attention needs to be paid to reference material addressing control processes, quality management, risk management, supply chain management and project leadership. As a guide, the case study analysis should address the following requirements:
The student will note a focus on the definition of project performance, the importance of building high-performance teams, monitoring and controlling performance risks, monitoring and managing the supply chain of an infrastructure project, and approaches to project procurement.
The importance is on asset maintenance and sustainability-based management throughout the complete life cycle from planning to post completion.
The student will note an emphasis on safety and security from different perspectives including facility vulnerability, safety considerations after disaster events, disaster management information system requirements and decision-making tools, contamination/hazard sites and contingency models.
The PROJ6011 Course Code consists of 50 percent weightage in the semester and this is able to provide major opportunities to the students so that they are able to develop their skills that can be implemented in the future.
